Charity Event – Tina Turner Tribute Night
CHARITY NIGHT IN AID OF CAPTAIN TOM FOUNDATION
Featuring Sass Brown as Tina Turner and the River Deep Band. Get your glad rags on and dance the night away celebrating the hard work of everyone in the NHS.
It all started in 1989 outside the canteen in Birmingham Medical School when Drummer Morgan Cleasby placed a note asking if anyone wanted to form a band. That band was called Apex Beat; a medical term used in cardiological examination. Including Morgan 4 members of the band go right back to that ad, they include Dave “Blind Lemon” Smith (blues harp and guitar). Gill Godsell (Trumpet/Cornet) and Penny Davis (Sax).
Alex Wong (Guitar) joined in 1991 and his housemate Jon Clatworthy (Bass, Vocals) joined a year or two later. There were many years of hugely enjoyable gigs in their student years, but as is often the way. Students grow up and building families takes precedence, and so it was after years of playing 60’s RnB classics in pubs around Birmingham, everybody drifted apart. Reforming after a 10 Year hiatus wasn’t difficult apart from the disproven belief that Jon had died. One day, Gill asked if she could bring a friend Sylvia from work to sing a song and unleashed the force of nature that is her Voice, she also brought in her friend and professional musician Mariusz to add keyboards to the mix, that more or less brings them to what they are now. Consisting of a midwife, 2 GP’s, 1 Radiologist, 1 Anaesthetist and 1 Paediatric Rheumatologist together they all make up Sass Brown and the River Deep Band.
Let’s raise a glass to all the heroes of the NHS staff who kept this country going, and make this an evening to remember with all profits going directly to the Captain Tom Foundation.
